How to Make Flatbread (Using Yoghurt)
I had some yoghurt in the fridge that needed using up, and as I also had some spicy humous running close to its use by date, I made up some tasty flatbreads using yoghurt. These are such an easy bread to make, and also make a great food activity to do with kids at home!
If you’re looking for a richer flatbread, I have a very easy to make no-knead roti bread recipe that uses butter instead of yoghurt which is also a firm favorite.

Kitchen Bits You’ll Need
The essential kitchen bits you’ll need to make flatbread using yoghurt are:
- Measuring cups & spoons
- Mixing bowl
- Rolling pin
- Frying pan or skillet
Ingredients You’ll Need

Baking Powder
To give these yoghurt flatbreads a bit of puff, I added in baking powder to my flour. You can leave this out if you use self-raising flour.
Flour
I use a basic all-purpose flour, the same I use for all my bread baking. You do not need anything fancy to make these flatbreads! If you have self-raising flour, use that and leave out the baking powder!
Yoghurt
The yoghurt I had left in my fridge was a ‘Greek style’ yoghurt, full fat and thicker than normal yoghurt.
Specific Ingredient Amounts
- 1 cup all-purpose plain flour (approx. 160g)
- ⅔ cup yoghurt
- ½ tsp baking powder (if using plain flour)
Substitutions To Consider
Yoghurt: If dairy yoghurt is not suitable, you can try substituting it for a plant-based yoghurt. I have not tested this though.
Making The Easy Flatbreads With Yoghurt
Such a simple process, you’ll have tasty flatbreads in very little time!
Step 1: Place the flour and the baking powder in a bowl. I didn’t bother with sifting it.

Step 2: Add the yoghurt and combine. I used a silicon tip spatula thingy to combine it all and keep my fingers clean.

Step 3: Once it is all combined you can make it into a ball and knead it lightly.

Step 4: Cut the ball of flatbread dough into six equal pieces. I use a plastic bread slicey thing to help.

Step 5: Roll each of the six dough pieces into small balls with your hands.

Step 6: Roll each of the balls out on a floured surface using a rolling pin. You can also heat a suitable pan on the stove, dry with no oils!

Step 7: I like to score lines into my flatbreads before placing in the hot pan.

Step 8: Allow the yoghurt flatbreads to cook for a minute or two on one side, and then flip it over and cook the second side. Your flatbread may start to puff up, as mine did below!

Step 9: Once slightly browned on both sides, they’re ready to eat! I like to do mine in a batch, and then pop them in a basket with a towel on top to keep them warm.

Serve Them With…
I like to eat these soft and tasty flatbreads dipped into humous or sliced open and filled with some salad and cheese, or even cooked in butter and drizzled with honey for a little sweet treat.
